What is prostate: The prostate is a gland about the size and shape of a walnut that sits below the bladder in men. The primary function of the prostate is to produce fluid for semen. The prostate pass through two main phases of growth. The first occurs early in puberty, when the prostate double in size. Second phase starts from age of around twenty five, when the gland begins to grow again. This second phase prostate enlargement many times result into what is known as an enlarged prostate (BPH).

Symptoms: The prostate enlargement (BPH) is not linked to cancer and does not increase the risk of prostate cancer. The symptoms for prostate enlargement  (BPH) and prostate cancer can be similar. Prostate enlargement (BPH) symptoms rarely start before the age of fifty, but almost 50 percent of the men in their sixties and about 90 percent of men in their seventies show some signs of prostate enlargement (BPH). The symptoms include:
(i) The need to get up number of times at night to pass urine.
(ii) A strong or sudden urge to urinate.
(iii) Passing urine more often than normal during the day.
(iv) Weak urine steam.
(v) Slowed or delayed start of urine stream.
(vi) Difficulty starting urine flow or producing only dribble.
(vii) Dribbling at the end of urinating.
(viii) A feeling that the bladder is not empty even just after urinating.
(ix) Pain with urination or bloody urine (these may indicate infection).
(x) Inability to urinate (urinary retention).
(xi) Stopping and starting several times while urinating.
Early symptoms may take years to become disruptive problems. If left unchecked, prostate enlargement (BPH) can lead to:
(i) A weak bladder.
(ii) Backflow of urine leading to bladder or kidney infections.
(iii) Full blockade in the urine flow.
(iv) Kidney failure.
Treatment: The selection of treatment depends upon the severity of your symptoms, the extent to which your daily life is affected, and the presence of other medical conditions. The possible options are lifestyle changes, the observant waiting, medication and surgery. If you are having prostate enlargement (BPH), you should go for yearly exam to monitor the development of your symptoms. The doctors are best to decide and select treatment, whether you need medications or surgery.
Tips to take care of your prostate: If you are over sixty, you have more chances of having prostate enlargement (BPH) symptoms. If you are having mild symptoms, prevention is the best medicine. Simple lifestyle changes can help you limit the symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate.
(i) Consume more of plant foods. Incorporate a healthful diet, comprising of at least five servings of a variety of vegetables and fruits every day, including tomatoes and other red and pink plant foods. Keep your diet low on unsaturated fats, sugar and processed foods.
(ii) Restrict eating of meats and dairy. It has been found that consumption of less of meat and dairy products can reduce hormonal effects on the prostate.
(iii) Avoid alcohol and beverages that contain caffeine, as they increase urine production and cause bladder irritation
(iv) Avoid drinking lot of fluid at once. Spread consumption of fluids during the day. Drink less at night; better avoid taking fluids within two hours before sleeping.
(v) Don’t hold urine. Urinate whenever you first feel the urge. Make it a habit to go to toilet whenever you get chance, even if you don’t get urge to urinate.
(vi) Avoid taking over-the-counter sinus and cold medications that contain antihistamines and decongestants, as they aggravate prostate enlargement (BPH) symptoms.
(vii) Keep yourself warm, as cold temperature contributes to the feeling of urge to urinate.
(viii) Manage your weight. It is believed that there is some relation between excess body fat and prostate enlargement. Obesity is also associated with diabetes. In a recent study a link has been found between prostate enlargement and high sugar levels.
(ix) Exercise regularly. Exercises regulate hormone levels and also help in managing your weight.
(x) Avoid stress. Tension can lead to frequent urination.
(xi) Do Kegel exercises. This is performed by pulling up all the muscles around scrotum and anus. Repeat this about ten times, five to six times a day.
(xii) Do not keep laptop on your lap and near prostate region.
It is recommended that over the age of 40 years, you should get your Prostate exam done whenever you go to your doctor for regular check-up, once a year.
