Homemade Lip Balm Recipes

1. Your Own Natural Quick Lip Balm

(i) Take some petroleum jelly in a microwave bowl. You can take as much quantity as much you want. If you take large quantity of petroleum jelly, you can put the remaining lip balm in a container for storage.

(ii) Place the bowl in the microwave. Microwave the petroleum jelly on high heat for about 25 seconds, or until it is melted.

(ii) Mix in some colour. A simple way to tint the petroleum jelly is by cutting a small piece of lipstick, eye shadow, or blush of your choice and adding it to the melted jelly. Use a fork to stir it carefully. If you find it hard to stir, put it back in the microwave to heat it for a few seconds to make it easy to mix the colour thoroughly.

(iv) To add a flavour, you can try mixing in a small amount of lemon juice, cranberry juice, orange juice or any other your favourite flavour. You can add as much as you fancy, depending upon how much flavour you desire to have.

(v) After the mixture have cooled down, store it in a container for use. Wow, your own at home customized quick lip balm is ready!!

2. Make Your Own Lemon Lime Lip Balm

(i) This Lip Balm is made from a mix of oils and solids that are merged to produce a blended mixture, which is spreadable but not liquefied. Whereas the oils act to make the balm soft and moisturizing, the beeswax thickens it, and the essential oils add in scent.

(ii) Take the following ingredients and combine them together to form a mixture in a bowl:

(a) 2 tablespoons of coconut oil.

(b) 2 tablespoons of olive oil.

(c) 1 tablespoon of chopped cosmetic grade beeswax

(d) 5 drops each of lemon essential oil and lime essential oil or alternatively you can choose any other essential oils of your choice.

(iii) Place the mixture in a double boiler, so that the lip balm mixture melts slowly over low heat.

(a) If you don’t have a double boiler, you can make your own with two different size pots. Take a large pot and a small pot that fits inside the large pot. Pour some water into larger pot, and then position the smaller pot inside it over the water. Put the lip balm mixture into small pot, taking care not to allow any water enter into the small pot.

(b) Consider keeping a pot reserved especially for making lip balm, as the beeswax is difficult to remove from cookware.

(iv) Melt the lip balm mixture over medium-high heat. Switch on the burner under the double boiler to heat the water and melt the ingredients. Stir the mixture as required to combine together everything to form a thoroughly unified lip balm.

(v) To add color, mix in a small piece of lipstick, blush or eye shadow of your choice, while it is still on heat. Blend it thoroughly with the help of a fork.

(e) Wow, your own lip balm is ready. Store it in a container and allow it to cool completely. Use it as and when required.

Natural Beauty Tip: Vary the quantity of the cosmetic grade beeswax depending upon how you like the texture. If you prefer a firmer lip balm, use more of wax. On the other hand if you want it to be softer, use more of oils.

3. Your Own Homemade Healing Lip Balm

(i) This homemade lip balm recipe requires cosmetic grade Beeswax, Coconut Oil, Honey, Vitamin E capsules and essential oil (optional).

(a) Cosmetic grade beeswax works as a moisturizer (emollient) and also protects your lips from the harsh environmental conditions. It also provides stiffness to the lip balm, so that it may be easily carried and used.

(b) Coconut oil does not layer and swamp your skin like petroleum based products. Rather it moisturizes deep down and its fatty acids retain moisture to boost the skins lipid (fat) layer, which fortifies hydration.

(c) Honey acts as a natural humectant, which helps to draw and hold onto water molecules.

(d) Vitamin E is packed with antioxidants. It works to offset the effects of free radicals that harm healthy skin cells and leads to dryness.

(e) Essential oil (optional) can be added, if you like your lip balm be scented. Just a few drops of any essential oil of your choice can add fragrance to the lip balm.

(ii) Take following natural ingredients:

(a) 1 tablespoon of grated cosmetic grade beeswax or beeswax pastilles

(b) 1 tablespoon of organic virgin coconut oil

(c) A little of organic raw honey

(d) 2 capsules of Vitamin E or 5 drops of Vitamin E oil

(e) Few drops of essential oil

(iii) Place the beeswax in a double boiler and melt it slowly over medium heat. Add in the coconut oil and honey when about half of the beeswax is melted. Don’t let the water get into the mixture. After it’s all melted and blended together, mix in contents of 2 Vitamin E capsules and use a fork to stir and mix them thoroughly with the mixture. Pour the mixture carefully into a container and let it cool completely. Apply this all natural lip balm when your lips are chapped as needed, but not in excess. Remember, there can be too much of a good thing even!!

4. Homemade Natural Tinted Lip Balm Recipe

(i) You require following natural ingredients:

(a) 2 tablespoons of coconut oil

(b) 1 tablespoon of cosmetic grade beeswax pastilles

(c) 1 tablespoon of Shea or Cocoa butter

(ii) Place all the ingredients in a double boiler and melt them slowly over medium heat. Stir the mixture gently until it’s all melted and blended thoroughly. Don’t let the water get into the mixture.

(iii) Mix in some color. A simple way to tint the lip balm is by cutting a small piece of lipstick, eye shadow, or blush of your choice and adding it to the melted mixture. Use a fork to stir it carefully. If you find it hard to stir, put it back in the microwave to heat it for a few seconds to make it easy to mix the color thoroughly.

(iv) If you like, mix in a little of your favorite essential oil as well while mixing color in the step (iii) above. My favorites are lemon and vanilla for scent.  If you want to play a little adventurous, mix in a couple of drops of peppermint also to make it feel like similar to Burt’s Bees Lip Chap.

(v) After the color and scent are blended, store this natural lip balm in a container and allow it to cool.

Natural Beauty Tips

(i) If you like to have the quick balm firm, try some melted cosmetic grade beeswax instead of petroleum jelly.

(ii) You may experiment with the essential oils to try different scents and fragrance.  Remember some oils are stronger than others, so add a few drops at a time, until the scent is to your liking.

(iii) For adding color and fragrance to your lip balm (note, they are optional), mix them while your balm is still over the heat.

Caution: If you are opting to mix in color from a makeup product, make sure it’s safe for use on lips. Never try to add nail polish or any other product that contains chemicals that should not be consumed.
